Scott Colley bass intro; "Vertigo"

Put in three hours on this yesterday and finished it. It is quite rubato, tempo fluctuating during performance. Other than a few speed ups, it can be fairly consistent. I chose to notate it by phrase and inserting fermattas where appropriate. The only way to truly get it is to listen to the recording, which I highly recommend, Vertigo by Chris Potter. I may repost this later with the analysis for practical use. I can say upon a quick overview he likes to color alternate tonalities on the same root note. Meaning he pulls many tensions out of this B minorish kind of world. Depending on your interpretation that could be polymodality or other fancy words. Another big feature I enjoy is its a half step above the bass line vamp for the song (written at in on the last bar [7/4 time]). So its like one big tritone sub-dominant of the Bb minor figure.

I'm glad this one is over, now I can get on to do other things with my life. Like another transcription.....

Raging Media

My anger with blogspot currently knows no end. None of the 1,000,000 widgets for mp3s work. It's simplicity baffles my basic HTML knowledge. I am stopping now before I dropkick the monitor out of existence (perhaps the printer as well).

Here is something from a little over a year ago with my friend Hassaan and an awesome drummer, Will Mason. Audio quality is not the best, but its a neat little clip of us playing "Four on Six" at Bowdoin College.

There is an audio snippet to the right which probably does nothing. I'm leaving it there for now until I, or divine intervention, get it to work.

Monday Morning Business Stuff

Getting over a cold, doing emails, making phone calls; or perhaps making emails and doing phone calls. At this point I can't tell the difference. Slowly building up the networking and, with a little luck, I can post some of the action going on.

Tuesday

Taking it easy from a weekend of gigging before starting another weekend of gigging. I have been re-evaluating my playing after watching a Ray Brown Masterclass video a few months back. He found these holes in the students' playing, stuff that I have heard plenty of times before. But this time it lit a spark within me. I am again finding the joy of being solid and laying down a bass line with unmovable foundation.

The blog which hosts the 9 part series of the Ray Brown video:

If you have about a half hour free, I recommend viewing this.

I also had the pleasure of finding a record shop up the street. Came home with The Who "Live at Leeds" and the Oscar Peterson Trio's "Something Warm." The vinyl are in pretty good shape, its nice to have that record quality again.

Resume is up!

After a couple hours I managed to embed it on the side of this blog. Now for your viewing pleasure is the condensed form of yours truly. Seeing with what I had to work with, I think it came out alright. I'm convinced that the fist of a former roommate has left lasting effects on my printer; she's not as precise as she used to be.

The Beginning

My name is Duane Edwards; a freelance bass player, electric and contrabass, and music educator. Recently I relocated to Southern Maine for work purposes. The credentials I wield include a mighty BA in Jazz and Contemporary Music from the University of Maine at Augusta. My performances have spanned great distances (down to Boston and up to New Brunswick) and slightly smaller distances (a recent weeklong tour of Hallowell, ME). These attest to fluency in several musical styles and their corresponding dialects.

More information will be posted soon.
